  14. This file contains instructions to help you get going with the demo 
  15. version of PipeDream 4.

  17. %C%%H2%How to read this file
  18.  
  19. Read this file before you start playing with PipeDream. You can scroll 
  20. through the document by using the up and down arrow keys, the Page Up 
  21. and Page Down keys or clicking in the scroll bar on the right hand 
  22. side of the window.

  24. %C%%H2%Once PipeDream is loaded
  25.  
  26. PipeDream is loaded when the blue 4 icon is visible on the icon bar at 
  27. the bottom of your screen. To start a new window click the left button 
  28. of the mouse on the PipeDream icon.  Investigate 
  29.  
  30. Pressing the middle, or Menu button, of the mouse whilst the blue 
  31. pointer arrow is over a PipeDream window will give you the top-level 
  32. PipeDream menu.

  34. Pressing the Menu button on the PipeDream icon gives you a further list 
  35. of options with which you may experiment.  One of these is New 
  36. Document.  This provides you with a list of Templates which you can use 
  37. to create new documents.  For example if you want to create a 
  38. spreadsheet you may fint it easiest to start from the Numbers template.

  42. A short help file is available by pressing the F1 key. This will help 
  43. you to get started.

  45. %C%%H2%Once you have a new window
  46.  
  47. When you have a new window, you can start typing. To type text, as you 
  48. would in a letter, just type away. To enter a number into the 
  49. spreadsheet, press the F2 key, and type in your expression. When you 
  50. press RETURN, the result of the calculation will be displayed in the 
  51. slot.

  53. Use the left and right buttons on the mouse to position the caret in a 
  54. slot.

  90. When you start PipeDream, the short menus are switched on. This makes 
  91. the menus clearer and more readable. To access the complete range of 
  92. PipeDream commands, select long menus by clicking the left button of 
  93. the mouse on the "Short Menus" option in the "Files" menu.

  95. On the long menus, the function key equivalent of the commands is also 
  96. shown, if there is one.  In PipeDream 4 the short menus are 
  97. configurable so if you prefer to have a different set of commands on 
  98. the short menus, you can do this.

  101.  
  102. PipeDream 4 can use either the system font, which this document is 
  103. using, or the RISC OS proportional fonts.  To select a font, use the 
  104. Font command (Ctrl-PFG) on the Print menu.  If the font selector shows 
  105. only system font then that is the only font that RISC OS has available 
  106. to it.

  108. We strongly recommend that you do not try to use the old "bitmap" font 
  109. manager with PipeDream 4.  If you want to use fonts we recommend that 
  110. you use the newer "outline" fonts and the font manager version 2.42 or 
  111. later.  This is especially true for using PipeDream 4's charts which 
  112. can use system font but which is happier using Homerton font.  If you 
  113. do not have the later font manager and some fonts your Acorn dealer 
  114. should be able to advise on the best ways to acquire them.  The 
  115. official Acorn way to do it is to purchase the Acorn fonts disc.  There 
  116. are other ways, one is to purchase Beebug's Ovation demo disc which 
  117. comes with a few fonts.

  119. The only RISC OS fonts which are used in the examples are Trinity and 
  120. Homerton.

  124. The demonstration version of PipeDream 4 has the spelling checker, file 
  125. saving, printing and searching disabled. Charts are overlayed with a 
  126. banner saying 'PipeDream 4 Demonstration version'.

  128. The LOTUS 123 to PipeDream converter program, the PipeDream to 
  129. Impression converter and the Z88 filing system are not supplied on the 
  130. demonstration disk. The release copy of PipeDream 4 also includes many 
  131. data files which are not supplied on the demonstration disc.

  146. There are several example files in the "documents" directory on the 
  147. demonstration disk. You can load a PipeDream file into PipeDream by 
  148. double-clicking on the icon of the file. PipeDream files have the 
  149. PipeDream icon displayed by their side.

  151. Experiment with the example files: these will give you an idea of some 
  152. of the different types of document you can create with PipeDream 4.

  154. To investigate PipeDream 4's charts look at the Rainfall file and 
  155. follow the instructions given in it.  After looking at this, try the 
  156. pfamily file to investigate penguin graphics.

  160. When using the demonstration version of PipeDream, please remember that 
  161. you don't have the documentation available. The manuals include a full 
  162. step-by-step tutorial and a large reference section. There is obviously 
  163. no space here to explain the finer features and facilities in PipeDream 
  164. - you will only get the full benefit by working with the manual, but 
  165. the demonstration should give you some idea of PipeDream's impressive 
  166. capabilities.

  237. Using CTRL key sequences. Alongside the commands in the 
  238. menus you will a sequence of letters: you can give the 
  239. command without using the menu system by holding down the 
  240. CTRL key, and, whilst it is held down, pressing the letters 
  241. shown. Delete word, for example, is CTRL-T.
